PYO’s Bravo Brass Concert on Sunday, December 4, 2011

Gifted high school students in unique brass-only ensemble will perform at Saint Mark’s Church in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia, PA – November 29, 2011 (Download PDF). Maestro Louis Scaglione, President and Music Director of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra organization (PYO), today announced the first concert of the season for PYO’s all-brass ensemble, Bravo Brass. The concert will be held on Sunday, December 4th at 7:30 p.m. in Saint Mark’s Church in Philadelphia.

Eighteen students in Bravo Brass will perform a program including von Suppe’s Light Calvary Overture, Bruckner’s Christus Factus est and Strauss’ Radetzky March. Trumpeter Robert Skoniczin and bass trombonist Barry McCommon, both associate conductors and faculty members of Bravo Brass, will perform as soloists with the ensemble in arrangements of arias from Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Bravo Brass is one of the few brass-only ensembles for gifted and talented classical music students in the country. The 2011/2012 season is the 15th anniversary for the ensemble.

“For our first concert of PYO’s 72nd season, Bravo Brass will perform music originating in Vienna,” said Bravo Brass Conductor, Paul Bryan. “The Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert has always been one of my favorite parts of the holidays, so Bravo Brass will salute the season with music from this incredible city. This will be a fun concert for the entire family.” Be sure to bring the kids because children 13 and under are admitted for free!

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students (14-17) and seniors; children 13 and under admitted free. Saint Mark’s Church is located at 1625 Locust Street in Philadelphia, PA. More information.

About the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra: Founded in 1939, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra organization is one of the nation’s oldest community music education and youth orchestra performance programs for gifted and talented students from the Tri-State region. Lead by Maestro Louis Scaglione, the organization’s flagship ensemble, Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO), provides the most talented students with advanced orchestral training and performance opportunities throughout the concert season. PYO’s companion ensembles include the Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra (PYAO), formed in 1996; Bravo Brass, added to the program in 2003; Philadelphia Region Youth String Music (PRYSM) created in 2007; and the Musicopia String Orchestra partnership, which began in 2008. Young musicians from ages six through 21 are selected by competitive audition and have represented the United States on five continents. The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra organization offers classical musical performances to the Greater Philadelphia region each year and supports musical education to children from Philadelphia’s more vulnerable neighborhoods through its newest after-school program launched in 2010, Tune Up Philly.
