The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Announces First PRYSM Concert of 2011
PRYSM (Philadelphia Regional Young String Music) will perform on Saturday, January 22 at 2 p.m. in Haverford, Pa.
Philadelphia, PA – January 18, 2011. (Download PDF) The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) today announced a concert from PYO’s PRYSM program on Saturday, January 22 at 2:00 p.m. in The Haverford School’s Centennial Hall in Haverford, Pa.
William dePasquale will conduct PRYSM as the ensemble of elementary and middle school-aged children perform Schubert/McCashin’s Symphony No. 8, Mvt. I, Tchaikovsky/ McCashin’s Symphony No. 5, Myt. II and J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins. Sarah Sutton will conduct the PRYSM Young Artists ensemble of young classical musicians as they perform Bartok/Mullins’ Folk Trilogy, Respighi/Brubaker’s Ancient Aires & Dances and Anderson/Bullock’s Plink, Plank, Plunk. PRYSM and PRYSM Young Artists will perform Ravel/Hopkins’ Enchanted Garden together.
“The students involved in PYO’s PRYSM and PRYSM Young Artists ensembles have been practicing for this performance since September 2010 and we are excited for these hardworking musicians’ first concert of the 2010/2011 season,” said Maestro Louis Scaglione, President and Music Director of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO). “I hope the community will attend this concert to support the students, as they will be offering a wonderful new performance this January.”

About the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra: Founded in 1939, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra is one of the nation’s oldest classical music training and orchestra performance programs for gifted and talented students from the Tri-State region. Lead by Maestro Louis Scaglione, PYO’s companion ensembles include the Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra (PYAO), formed in 1996; Bravo Brass, added to the program in 2003; Philadelphia Region Youth String Music (PRYSM) created in 2007; and the Musicopia String Orchestra partnership, which began in 2008. Young musicians from ages six through 21 are selected by competition audition and have represented the United States on five continents. The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) offers classical musical performances to the Greater Philadelphia region each year and supports musical education to children from Philadelphia’s more challenging neighborhoods through its newest after-school program launched in 2010, Tune Up Philly.
