Proudest PYO moment: My favorite moment throughout my two years with the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra would have to be when I was appointed concertmaster for the 2009-2010 70th anniversary season. This season’s repertoire included Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Kimmel Center. These two performances were amazing and unforgettable!

How has PYO helped you grow musically: The pieces that Maestro Scaglione chose for the 70th season made me a more passionate musician. Instead of just playing the notes, Maestro Scaglione makes you take the time and think about what you are playing and feeling. He wants you to understand the message of the composition, which helps you grow as a musician. Because of Maestro, I have pushed myself to become a better musician and perform to the best of my ability.

Favorite memory: During my first year with PYO, I had the privilege to meet Charles Dutoit, Chief Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, at the annual PYO gala. Another favorite memory was the first time I walked out on stage as concertmaster and I got chills down my spine. One last funny memory was when the orchestra surprised Maestro Scaglione by playing him Happy Birthday instead of a piece by Shostakovich.

Career aspirations: After I complete high school, I plan to continue to pursue a career in music. This is what I love and enjoy, and I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. I would like to go to a music conservatory and then join a major professional orchestra. I would also like to continue teaching younger students. It is exciting when you see their faces after they have mastered a piece.

Last words: I would encourage everyone who has a love for music, especially orchestral music, to consider auditioning for PYO. It has been an incredible experience! To those in the orchestra this past season, thanks so much for a wonderful year.
