Violist Sarah Sutton has brought music to some of the most eminent figures in the history of our time. She has played a command performance for Pope John Paul II; was invited to perform at the State Banquet and Celebrations in honor of Nelson Mandella and Queen Elizabeth II, not to mention performances for Princess Diana, The Duchess of York and the Duchess of Kent. Her playing has been described by the Saanen Post as "enthralling", captivating audiences with her "range of emotion and the darkly melancholic timbre of the instrument".
Ms. Sutton has performed throughout Europe, North and South America. She has appeared as both soloist and principal violist with the Camerata Lysy Gstaad, and played at many prestigious venues, including the Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels; Teatro Colon, Buenes Aires, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and St. John's Smith Square, London. Festivals include solo and chamber music performances at the Summer Music Festival at Blackthorpe Barn, England, the Menuhin Festival and AlpenGala in Gstaad, Switzerland, the Verbier Summer Academy, Switzerland, and Tanglewood, in the U.S. An avid chamber musician, she has collaborated with the Carmina Quartet as guest violist in the Mozart Quintets, and has appeared as a soloist performing Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 with members of the New World Symphony and Nicholas McGeegan. She has been a guest artist in the Leopold Mozart Chamber Music Series, presenting a programme of trio music with ‘cellist Mirjam Ingolfsson, and renowned violinist, Judith Ingolfsson as well as presenting recitals at many local venues, including the Church of the Holy Trinity Rittenhouse Square, Ardmore Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church (Philadelphia) and Calvin Hall.
As an orchestral player, Ms Sutton has held the Principal Viola position with the New World Symphony (directed by Michael Tilson-Thomas) and was a member of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. She has been a Guest Sub Principal Viola (No.2) with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London UK); participating in the historic EMI recording of Tristan and Isolde with Antonio Pappano and Placido Domingo, and the new production of Das Rheingold which has been broadcast live from the Royal Opera House on BBC2 and BBC Radio 3. Ms Sutton is currently a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia under the direction of Ignat Solzhenitzen, and is also a Guest musician with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Teaching is a very important part of Sarah's life. She has held positions at the Hindhead School of Music (UK) and the New England Music Camp (Maine, USA). She currently has a flourishing private studio in the Philadelphia area, and has spent the past two years as Associate Conductor of the Main Line Youth Chamber Orchestra, and Director of the Main Line Young Artists' Ensemble. Starting in September 2009, she will be joining PRYSM, where she will work with the PRYSM Young Artists Orchestra. She is also an Instructor of Viola for the College House Music Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She has performed the role of string clinician for a number of high schools, and has also served as a coach for the Florida Youth Orchestra. She studied violin/viola pedagogy with the renowned Mimi Zweig, and has taught at Indiana University String Academy (Bloomington IN), as well as being appointed Associate Instructor of Viola, teaching Freshman Performance Majors and Viola Elect studies at Indiana University.
Born in England, Ms. Sutton is a graduate of the Yehudi Menuhin School of Music, London, where she studied with Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Simon Rowland-Jones, Yuko Inoue, Mauricio Fuks and Wen Zhou Li. She went on to accept a full scholarship at The International Menuhin Music Academy, Switzerland, where her teachers were Maestro Alberto Lysy and Johannes Eskaer. Ms. Sutton was also the recipient of a full scholarship to study with Alan DeVeritch at Indiana University, where she was his Assistant.
